Genre Research
Genre is a category or style of art in music, movies or literature. Here we specifically pointing out the movies and kind of genres used in the movies throughout the world. Films since the beginning has played a major role as a source of entertainment for the audiences. But we see that, people from society to society, country to country and even continent to continent have different taste regarding what kind of films they want to enjoy.
Even before the films introduced, live theatre plays performed by the actors on stage were divided into genres.
Following that, same strategy applies to the screen or films. To satisfy the needs of the audiences, Filmmakers from around the world chooses different styles and experiment with different genres throughout their career. Sometimes they fails and sometimes the numbers on the box office exceeds the expectations.
There are different types of genres which we see in todays cinema :
- Horror
- Comedy
- Sci-fi
- Romantic
- Action
- Thriller
- Drama
- Historical
- Sports
The above mentioned genres rule the film industry. However it has not been like that since the beginning. Genres like Sci-fi and Animated movies were developed over time. They required high level of investment as well as technological advancements which took so many decades, trial and error experiments to bring out what we see and enjoy on our screens today.
As a student and beginner filmmaker, I prefer watching thriller and comedy genres. There are the ones who have been in the lead since the filmmaking was born.
My genre is not so complicated and I have tried to keep it as simple as possible. It falls in the drama genre with a much expected dramatic conflict which eventually ends up getting resolved in the other half of my opening sequence.
Lets put some light on my favorite genre Comedy!
The first known comedy movie was “ The Sprinkler Sprinkled”
It is a silent comedy film produced and directed by the Lumière brothers, Auguste and Louis. It was a first film to depict a story as well as earliest known examples of a comedy movie.
Audience loved the idea and it became a proper genre for the film industry. Directors/filmmakers has experimented with the comedy by merging it with many other genres like action and romantic movies and accomplished commercial success.
